Individual & Family Health Insurance

We help individuals and families compare and enroll in ACA Marketplace (MNsure) plans, check whether you qualify for premium subsidies, and screen for MinnesotaCare or Medical Assistance.

ACA Marketplace plans

Marketplace plans are grouped into metal tiers. Higher tiers cost more each month but cover more of your care when you use it. Most Minnesotans buy these plans through MNsure, where income-based subsidies can lower the premium.

Plan tiers

TierWhat it means in plain language
CatastrophicFor people under 30 or with a hardship exemption. Lowest premium; you pay nearly all costs until a very high deductible.
BronzePlan pays about 60% of covered costs on average. Lowest standard-tier premiums; highest out-of-pocket when you need care.
Expanded BronzeA richer Bronze (roughly 60–65% of costs) that often covers some services before the deductible.
SilverPlan pays about 70%. The only tier where income-based cost-sharing reductions can apply when you enroll through MNsure.
GoldPlan pays about 80%. Higher monthly premium, lower costs when you use care.
PlatinumPlan pays about 90%. Highest premium, lowest out-of-pocket costs. Often no longer available — few insurers still offer Platinum plans, and availability varies by county and year.
